Body found on bench by Fla. Confederate monument
PENSACOLA, Fla. — Pensacola police are awaiting autopsy results before they release new information regarding a dead body that was found at the Confederate Monument in downtown Pensacola Sunday morning.
A passerby discovered the body on a bench at the foot of the monument in Lee Square, 602 N. Palafox St., and contacted police at about 9:30 a.m. ET.
Officers spent several hours at the scene Sunday, collecting evidence and interviewing neighbors.
One witness at the scene, who would not give his name to the Pensacola News Journal, said he was doing yard work Sunday morning when he witnessed what he said was an altercation between two men. He said one of the men appeared to be in a rage and chased the other with a brick out of his view, but he can’t confirm that fight was connected to the death.
Police are still investigating and more information will be released as it becomes available. An autopsy will be done to determine cause of death.
