Shooting at family celebration leaves boy dead, 3 hurt

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 7-year-old child was shot and killed Saturday in southwest Charlotte when shots were fired at a family party, injuring two adults and another child, police said.
Authorities received multiple calls just before 9:00 p.m. Saturday in the area of Fieldvale Place. When officers approached the scene, they were flagged down by family members with a 7-year-old boy suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Medics transported the victim, Kevin Antonio Calderon Rodas, to Carolinas Medical Center. He was pronounced dead a short time later. Two adult victims and another child were treated on the scene with non-life threatening injuries.
CMPD Deputy Chief Jeff Estes says the community has a lot of reflecting to do in the wake of this tragedy.
"It's a sad state of affairs, we have a lot of soul searching to do when as a city and a country a (child) isn't safe playing in the front yard," said Estes.
At this time, the motive for the shooting is still unknown. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police detectives and officers are still investigating the area with K-9 units as well as aviation and gang units.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
