Police: 3 bodies found after mother drives car, twin daughters into Michigan river

DETROIT — Police in Kalamazoo, Michigan, have found three dead after a mother reportedly drove her car — with her 9-year-old twin girls inside — into a river.

Family members notified the police that the 44-year-old mother had driven her vehicle and her two children into the Kalamazoo River Monday evening, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

While public safety officers were immediately able to find the car and the bodies of two of the victims near Kalamazoo's Verburg Park, police and divers from the Michigan State Police worked through Monday night to recover the car and the third body.

Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Karianne Thomas told the Free Press that police found the second child's body at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Police know the incident was intentional, but Thomas said motive is currently unknown.

The department is not releasing the victims' names pending notification of relatives.
