HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Multiple injuries were reported late Wednesday night during a training operation that went wrong at Camp Shelby in Mississippi.

Public Affairs Officer Capt. Ashley Bain-Sangster confirmed there are a number of injuries, but declined to give an actual number. She said soldiers are still working to contain the scene and make sure everyone is accounted for.

About 650 soldiers with the 4th Brigade Combat Team 25th Infantry Division out of Anchorage, Alaska, were participating in the training exercise.

Approximately 180 were in the zone at the time of the incident. Eighty-nine paratroopers made it out of the planes, said Sgt. Alex Skripnichuk, with the 4th Brigade’s public affairs office. There were multiple aircraft participating in the exercise. Each plane carries up to 60 people.

Emergency responders transported some of the injured to local hospitals in Hattiesburg, where teams of doctors and nurses could be seen walking quickly toward the emergency room.

Bain-Sangster said more than 3,000 soldiers from the 4th brigade are at Camp Shelby for training.
