PENSACOLA, Fla. – A Saudi defense official met Monday with the Saudi students who remain restricted at Naval Air Station Pensacola after a deadly shooting last week that left four dead, including the gunman, and eight injured.

The FBI's Jacksonville Division, which is handling the investigation of the attack, tweeted Tuesday morning that Saudi Arabian Maj. Gen. Fawaz Al Fawaz and his embassy staff met with the Saudi students. They've been detained on the base by their Saudi commanding officer since the shooting.

The FBI identified the shooter as a 21-year-old second lieutenant in the Royal Saudi Air Force. Investigators are working under the presumption that the attack was terrorism, which allows officials to take advantage of techniques to help more quickly identify other threats, said Rachel Rojas, special agent in charge for the FBI's Jacksonville Division.

Officials haven't released a motive for the shooting but said they're working to determine what, if any, ideology played a role.

The FBI's Jacksonville Division tweeted that it and "our partners appreciate the continued cooperation by the Saudi government as our investigation continues."
