'Tragic': 4 dead after SUV crashes into moving freight train, catches fire in suburban Chicago

Four people were killed Wednesday morning when an SUV crashed into a moving freight train and caught fire in the Chicago suburb of Harvey.

The Dodge Durango, with four occupants, collided with the CSX train at a crossing at 2:11 a.m. CST, a spokesperson for the train company told Paste BN.

The SUV “drove into the freight train,” and all four people inside the vehicle were killed, Harvey city spokesman Jason Baumann said. No train crew members were injured.

CSX said the SUV crashed into the last rail car of a train that consisted of three locomotives and 47 rail cars.

“CSX extends its deepest sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragic incident, and we will work to support local law enforcement as they investigate,” CSX's statement said.

Baumann said Harvey Police and Fire Rescue responded to the scene after someone called and reported the crash. He added that it wasn’t immediately clear whether or where the train stopped after the collision, but when he arrived at about 4 a.m., there was no train at the crossing and CSX workers were replacing the crossing gates.

Baumann confirmed an investigation into the crash is underway.
