Bus driver's actions 'saved lives' after suspect opened fire on Florida bus, killing 2, police say

Two people were killed and at least five others were injured Thursday during a shooting on a commuter bus and a subsequent crash in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, police said.

As the shooting unfolded, a quick-thinking bus driver plowed the bus through traffic to reach a police station parking lot, where officers arrested the suspect, according to Fort Lauderdale Police Department Investigative Bureau Assistant Chief Luis Alvarez.

“Her actions, I am sure, saved lives," Alvarez said in a press conference broadcast by a local television station.

Three people were injured when the bus crashed into their vehicle, police said. Their injuries were minor.

The suspect shot four people on the Broward County Transit bus, according to officials. One of the shooting victims died at the scene, and another later died at a hospital. The other two remained at the hospital.
