'I cannot believe they drove away like that': Videos capture destructive Texas tornadoes


AUSTIN, Texas — Several tornadoes touched down Monday evening across Central Texas, causing major damage, injuries and at least one reported death.

Damage and some injuries were reported near Elgin, which is about 30 miles east of Austin. Two more tornadoes touched down north of Austin and caused damage in Round Rock, which is 20 miles north of Austin, and Hutto, just northeast of Round Rock.

Videos across social media show the devastation caused by the tornadoes and high wind.

Confirmed tornadoes also caused damage in Granger and Taylor, Texas, as well as the Oklahoma town of Kingston, according to local officials and National Weather Service centers.

Video shows red truck in path of tornado 

Brian Emfinger captured this astounding video of a red pickup truck getting whipped around by a funnel, then driving off.

"I cannot believe they drove away like that," Emfinger, who describes himself as a storm chaser, videographer and photojournalist in his Twitter bio, said in a tweet sharing the video. 

Drone footage from Round Rock shows damage

A tornado touched down in Round Rock, north of Austin, according to the Williamson County Office of Emergency Management, which also said a "massive tornado" touched down east of Round Rock, near Taylor.

Drone footage of the damage in Round Rock was shared by the Austin American-Statesman, which is part of the Paste BN Network. 

In the following video, Nicholas Mitchell spotted debris being strewn about by the severe storms in Round Rock. Wind and downed trees tore through the roofs off dozens of houses and a few businesses.

Tornado rips through Elgin countryside 

The city of Elgin, east of Austin, saw major damage and some injuries. Elgin police reported at least four injuries, including a rescue of two people in a collapsed structure. 

Elgin city manager Bert Cunningham said the worst damage was east of the town, with as many as four entrapments reported.

Minna Harmon captured the following video in Elgin, as a tornado tore through the countryside and destroyed homes and property.

Drone video shows damage in Jacksboro

A tornado touched down around 3:41 p.m. Monday in Jacksboro, Texas, a city of about 5,000 people northwest of Fort Worth, according to Accuweather. The tornado damaged mobile homes and trees near the city, the National Weather Service said, and NBC 5 reported Jacksboro High School and the city's animal shelter were both damaged.
