Exhausted dog requires rescue on a stretcher after climbing England's highest mountain
A dog that needed some help getting down from England’s highest peak was “cool, calm and positively regal,” said the rescue team.
The Akita's owners called in a rescue on May 13 for their injured dog who wouldn’t budge after they successfully climbed the 3,209-foot-high Scafell Pike, the highest and the most prominent mountain in England located in the country's North West. The popular hiking destination is part of the UK's National Three Peaks Challenge, which entails climbing the highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales.
A team of 13 volunteers responded to help get the dog down around 6 p.m. as colder temperatures set in.
The dog was exhausted, had a cut paw and was “refusing to move,” Keswick mountain rescue team said in a statement over the weekend. The dog was "made comfortable in a [casualty bag] on the stretcher and sledged/carried back to Seathwaite Farm," the team wrote.
“Despite being quite a large dog at (nearly 77 pounds) it was a joy to carry such a relatively lightweight casualty,” the statement said. It “remained cool, calm and positively regal throughout."
