7-year-old child fatally shoots 5-year-old in accidental shooting at Kentucky home: Police

A 7-year-old child fatally shot a 5-year-old child at an eastern Kentucky home on Monday, police said.

Kentucky State Police said an initial investigation found the shooting was accidental.

Life-saving measures were attempted, but the child was pronounced dead by a coroner at the scene on Coal Road in Jackson County, police said.

Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens (ages 1 to 19) in the United States, according to the Everytown for Gun Safety advocacy group. Every year, 18,000 children and teens are shot and killed or wounded and approximately 3 million are exposed to gun violence.
