Fire breaks out in the basement of Tiffany and Co.'s flagship store in New York

A fire broke out in the basement of Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue Thursday morning.

The FDNY received a phone alarm at 9:38 a.m. reporting smoke at the building, said Deputy Chief Joseph Carlsen in a press conference. Over 100 people were evacuated, and two people were hospitalized with minor injuries.

The officers shut down the HVAC system to prevent smoke from spreading to the rest of the building and searched the premises. They determined that the fire came from the utility vault and did not extend into the rest of the building. The fire was under control by 12:02 p.m.

The store, made iconic by the 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany’s," reopened last month after a four-year renovation, led by architect Peter Marino.

The New York store is the headquarters of the luxury retailer founded in 1837 by jeweler Charles Lewis Tiffany. The company was acquired by LVMH in 2021.
