2 firefighters shot at fire station in Birmingham, Alabama; police search for shooter


Two Alabama firefighters were shot while on duty at a fire station in Birmingham Wednesday in what police are investigating as a possible “targeted attack,” authorities said.

Around 8:30 a.m. local time, Birmingham police responded to a report of two Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Department firefighters being shot at Fire Station #9, Fitzgerald said in a video posted on Facebook.  

The shooter entered the station through an open bay door, the Associated Press reported. At least one other firefighter was at the station during the shooting, but was not hurt.

Birmingham fire and rescue personnel arrived at the scene and transported the two firefighters – Jamel Jones and Jordan Melton – to UAB hospital, the fire department said in a news release on Twitter.

The fire department listed Melton in critical condition and Jones in serious condition, but did not elaborate on their injuries.

“We have no one in custody,” Fitzgerald said.

Police investigating whether shooting was a ‘targeted attack’

In a news conference Wednesday, Police Chief Scott Thurmond said police are investigating whether the shooting was a “targeted attack." 

Fitzgerald said police have deployed “numerous resources” to find the shooter, but are asking the public for additional information.

Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama is offering a $10,000 reward for any information regarding the incident. The investigation is ongoing and no further information was released.
