Driver flees Secret Service near National Mall, runs red light, kills pedestrian in DC, officials say

A driver, who was fleeing Secret Service officers after a traffic stop, ran a red light and fatally struck a pedestrian Wednesday in Washington, D.C., officials said. Police are still searching for the driver.

Around 1:30 p.m. local time, Secret Service Uniformed Division officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop for a vehicle with an expired registration when the driver fled after indicating they would stop, Secret Service Uniformed Division Lt. Paul Mayhair said in a statement.

The driver then ran a red light and struck multiple people on a crosswalk at 17th Street NW and Constitution Avenue, Mayhair said.

Secret Service officers who witnessed the collision immediately rendered aid to a victim before D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene, Mayhair said.
