Explosion at Utah apartment complex injures husband and wife; dozens evacuated, city says
The circumstances of the explosion at a Lehi, Utah apartment complex were "considered suspicious," a city communications manager said.
An explosion at a Utah apartment complex led to dozens of people being evacuated, two people sustaining injuries and extensive damage throughout the building, city officials said.
The Lehi police and fire departments responded to a report of an explosion on Tuesday around 4:10 a.m. at the Lehi Tech Apartments. The explosion happened in the apartment of a husband and wife, both of whom sustained minor injuries from debris, Jeanteil Livingston, Lehi City communications manager, told Paste BN in an email, adding that 90 families were evacuated.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, and as of Tuesday morning, the "circumstances are considered suspicious," according to Livingston.
Lehi is 30 miles away from Salt Lake City, Utah.
Lehi apartment explosion 'considered suspicious'
Apartments below the couple's unit were affected by the explosion because the sprinkler system went off and caused water damage, according to Livingston. No other injuries were reported aside from the couple's.
The Red Cross is assisting the displaced families until the fire suppression system is restored and the apartments are deemed safe for reentry, Livingston said. The Lehi Tech Apartments are also allowing families to stay in unoccupied units away from the scene of the incident until they can return to their homes, she added.
It is unclear how long it will take until the families can safely reenter their apartments.
