An explosion at a Pennsylvania apartment complex destroyed or damaged multiple units and left at least eight people without homes Thursday evening, according to multiple reports.

Firefighters in Clairton, Pennsylvania, responded to reports of an explosion shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Thursday evening that left two units at the apartment complex destroyed and two others damaged, according to local media outlets KDKA and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At least eight people were reportedly displaced by the explosion, although no injuries were reported.

Fire crews told local media they put out a small fire upon arriving at the scene.

Neighbors smelled gas, reports say

A neighbor of the apartment complex told local media they had smelled gas in the area on Thursday afternoon and had alerted Peoples Natural Gas about the situation.

Peoples Natural Gas confirmed it had been alerted of a possible leak on Nov. 21 and had dispatched a technician to the apartment complex, but that the source of the gas odor was not coming from the company's system.

"The safety of the public and our employees is our first priority, and we are working closely with the Allegheny County Fire Marshall and local emergency responders. This is an active situation, and more information will be released as it becomes available," the company said in a statement to Paste BN on Friday.

The Clairton Volunteer Fire Department did not immediately respond to phone calls on Friday.

The cause of the explosion is currently under investigation by the Allegheny County Fire Marshall's office.
