6 people killed after car went airborne, smashed into support column in NJ, officials say

Six people were killed in a fiery car crash in Newark, New Jersey late Friday, prosecutors announced.

A vehicle with six individuals was traveling toward the Route 1&9 southbound on-ramp, less than 15 miles outside of Manhattan, New York, when the accident occurred around 10:47 p.m. local time.

"It somehow went off the roadway, became airborne, and struck a support column for the Pulaski Skyway before landing on the ground. Upon landing, the vehicle caught fire," the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

All six individuals in the vehicle were killed. The identities of the victims have not been released.

"This is an ongoing and active investigation so no further details can be provided at this time," Carmen Martin, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office, said in an email.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Investigations Bureau said Saturday that the accident was still under investigation.

The prosecutor's office scheduled a news conference on the incident for Monday afternoon and said no further updates would be issued until then.
