Texas police officer fatally shot during traffic stop, suspect arrested

A 25-year-old suspect from Mississippi is in custody for allegedly shooting and killing Terrell Police Department Officer Jacob Candanoza.

A Texas police officer was killed in the line of duty after being shot during a traffic stop, according to his department.

Terrell Police Department Officer Jacob Candanoza, 28, died on Monday from injuries he sustained during the traffic stop that occurred around 11 p.m. Sunday on South State Highway 34, according to a news release shared on the Department's Facebook page.

Candanoza requested additional units for assistance during the stop, but within moments of this dispatch, the department received two 911 calls about an officer being shot, police said. A radio transmission from a citizen gave police the same information, according to the release.

When officers arrived at the scene, they confirmed that Candanoza had been shot, police said. Candanoza received medical attention immediately before being taken to a nearby hospital where he ultimately died from his injuries, the department added.

Candanoza had only been an officer with the Terrell Police Department since July 2024, according to the release.

"Our deepest condolences go out to his family as they navigate this tragic time," police said.

Candanoza is survived by his wife and child, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.
