Explosion at Seymour Paint plant in Sycamore, Illinois hospitalizes 2 workers

Two workers were seriously injured Monday morning in an explosion at a paint production facility in northeast Illinois, according to authorities.

The explosion was reported at about 8:30 a.m. at the Seymour Paint factory in Sycamore, located a little more than 60 miles west of Chicago, Fire Chief Bart Gilmore said in a press release.

While the explosions triggered the building's water and foam fire suppression system to activate, fire engines also needed to extinguish the flames that were contained to the building's interior, according to the release, provided Tuesday to Paste BN. It's believed the fire occurred as a result of a paint can that exploded, Gilmore said, according to KABC-TV.

2 workers hospitalized after explosion at Seymour

Two people were hospitalized after the explosion at the Seymour facility, a 75-year-old company that invented aerosol paint. The workers, who Gilmore said were in stable condition as of Tuesday, were reported to have "severe burns," according to WGN-TV.

A third person was also treated at the scene.

Gilmore told reporters at the scene that the blaze was under control in less than 30 minutes.

"Luckily, we had a fast response time, and the fire was able to be suppressed before any real significant damage, and this became a much larger incident," Gilmore told reporters at the scene.

Paste BN reached out to Seymour Paint for comment Tuesday morning.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
