January 2024 in photos: Paste BN's most memorable pictures of the year
January 2024 started with powerful storms sweeping across the southeast United States on January 8 and 9, including a tornado that tore apart the Florida Caverns RV Resort in the small community of Marianna, Florida, about an hour Northwest of Tallahassee. When Tallahassee Democrat photographer Alicia Devine arrived on the scene she recalled seeing personal belongings scattered across the park. “Many people lost everything – entire RVs were gone,” said Devine. She photographed Nicholas Amley on his hands and knees, sifting through the rubble, helping his brother-in-law search for any salvageable belongings. “Families had lost so much. It was upsetting to have to carefully step to avoid people’s belongings that were strewn about.”
The Michigan Wolverines capped off an undefeated season in January by beating the Washington Huskies, 34-13, in the College Football Playoff national championship game to win their first title since 1997. January also featured a the official start of the 2024 Presidential election season with the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primaries.
