Seven police officers in San Antonio, Texas, were shot by a barricaded suspect Wednesday night while responding to a "suicide in progress," the city's police chief said.
Chief William McManus told reporters the incident started when a family member called police to report the incident. The incident occurred at an apartment complex on the 18700 block of Stone Oak Parkway, according to police.
McManus said in a video posted to the San Antonio Police Department's Facebook page that the first officer who arrived was shot, and "six others subsequent to that were shot as well."
In a social media post earlier Wednesday night, the police department said four officers were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The condition of the other three officers is unclear.
Investigation underway to determine how suspect died
McManus said a SWAT team arrived on scene, and the suspect barricaded himself inside an apartment for several hours.
"At the end of the event, the suspect was found to have been deceased. We don't know if he was shot by a self-inflicted wound or whether he was shot by SWAT officers," McManus said in a video posted to the SAPD's Facebook page. The suspect, who was not identified by police, had been arrested Saturday on assault and DWI charges and was out on bond, according to McManus.
