2 dead, 2 police officers injured in shooting at Indiana grocery store, police say

Two people were killed and two police officers were injured Monday after a shooting at a northern Indiana grocery market, authorities said.
A person opened fire inside Martin's Super Market in Elkhart, Indiana, in the early evening, Elkhart Police Department spokesperson Jessica McBrier told reporters. Two responding officers exchanged gunfire with a suspect, who was killed in the incident, police said.
The officers were taken to a local hospital and are in stable condition, according to McBrier. She did not share additional information on the two people killed or the suspected shooter.
The two people were killed inside the grocery store, according to McBrier. It wasn't immediately clear where the suspected shooter died.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected," McBrier said. "It's a sad day in Elkhart."
McBrier said the shooting posed no further danger to the public and that police would share information as it became available. Homicide police are investigating the incident.
The shooting prompted a response from Indiana Gov. Mike Braun.
"As details emerge about the shooting in Elkhart, we are in communication with state and local law enforcement," Braun said. "Maureen and I are praying for the victims and their families."
Elkhart is about 15 miles east of South Bend, Indiana.
'All I could think about was my kids'
Erin Swary, a Martin's shopper, shared her harrowing experience on WNDU-TV Monday evening. She told the local TV station that she was in the middle of checking out when the shooting began.
"I was just watching my bill go up and making small talk with the bagger and then we heard a pop and honestly I thought it was a balloon," she said, WNDU-TV reported. "Call me crazy."
Six to eight shots followed, according to Swary, and she ducked when she saw everyone else in the store hide.
"All I could think about was my kids and how if he came around that corner I would probably be gone," she told the TV outlet. "I was scared for my life... When you hear something like that you assume someone who is doing that is going around doing it randomly."
