'Tragic accident': Texas 2nd grader dies after getting caught in car door at school drop off
A Texas second grader died Friday following a "tragic accident" at a school drop-off area, police said.
According to the Borger Police Department, first responders were called to Gateway Elementary around 8 a.m. after a student's coat got caught in a car door as they got out of the vehicle.
A senior school official tried to help, but "the incident happened so quickly that it could not be stopped," police said.
Following life-saving efforts at the scene, the child was taken to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Community grieves student's death
The Borger Independent School District released a statement saying counselors will be available for the school community on Monday. The police did not release any additional details about the child's identity.
"Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible accident as they navigate this devastating loss," the Borger Police Department said. "The entire community grieves alongside them."
The agency noted on Friday that a local Walmart donated 40 stuffed animals to be placed at the child's memorial in front of the school.
Borger is about 50 miles from Amarillo.
