2 teens charged with capital murder in fatal shooting of CVS security guard in Dallas

Both teenagers were allegedly shoplifting from the CVS before 39-year-old Anthony Egeonu was fatally shot.

Two teenagers have been charged with capital murder after a shoplifting attempt in Dallas, Texas led to a CVS security guard being fatally shot, police said.

A 13-year-old and 15-year-old are accused of killing 39-year-old Anthony Egeonu on Jan. 24, Dallas police said in a news release. Officers responded to the CVS on Main Street around 11:05 p.m. and found a wounded Egeonu, who emergency responders rushed to a hospital, where he died, according to the department.

Police said two teenagers were taken into custody that night. Dallas Interim Police Chief Michael Igo held a community meeting Tuesday night to discuss the shooting and revealed that the teenagers purchased a prepaid cellphone card before they allegedly began shoplifting at the CVS, KDFW and CBS News reported.

"We have a concerned community and obviously whether it's a homicide, tragic homicide, or an incident regarding the assault of a person, we never want to see that," Igo said during the meeting, per CBS News. "We never want to see that in any of our communities."

CVS Health told Paste BN in a statement emailed on Wednesday that it is "cooperating with Dallas police as they investigate the shooting that occurred at our Main Street store last Friday night."

"While the victim, Anthony Egeonu, was employed by a third-party security company, he was well-liked by our store and pharmacy employees and served an important role in keeping our colleagues, customers and patients safe," the statement continued. "Our thoughts are with Anthony's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time."

What happened at the CVS in Dallas?

When Egeonu tried to stop the teens that night, Igo said a struggle ensued with the 13-year-old, who at some point pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at the security guard before taking off in a white Kia, according to the TV station in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Igo added that police believe, "but can't confirm," that the teenagers "may be involved in other offenses not from the Dallas area," KDFW said.

Egeonu’s family, including Anthony Egeonu's wife, Octavia, attended Tuesday's meeting. The couple has three children together, NBC DFW reported.

"I still thought everything was okay because I knew he had his vest on," Octavia Egeonu, told CBS News. "So when I got to the hospital, I was not expecting for them to tell me that they were sorry. I was expecting them to tell me that maybe he was in ICU or maybe he had just been wounded."

"How do you tell a 15-year-old your dad won't be taking you to the father-daughter day? How do you tell my 10-year-old he won't be at her graduation from elementary, and my 4-year-old who stays up every night to wait on his dad to come home?"

GoFundMe created for the Egeonu family

A GoFundMe was created for the Egeonu family, and as of Wednesday has raised more than $16,000.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share the tragic news of Anthony's untimely passing. On the night of Friday, January 24, 2025, Anthony was working security when his life was tragically taken by thieves during a shoplifting incident. Anthony was not only a dedicated and hardworking individual but also the sole provider for his family," according to the fundraising page.

"Anthony was a beloved figure in our community, known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his loved ones. He leaves behind his grieving wife and children, who are now facing an unimaginable loss."

According to GoFundMe's organizer, Jermain Pipkins, all donations will "go directly to his wife and children to help cover their living expenses and ensure they are taken care of."
