Woman finds brother bound, gagged, beaten to death in basement of Chicago home: Reports

A 63-year-old man has been found dead in a Chicago basement, tied up with duct tape and an extension cord, according to Chicago police and reports from CBS News Chicago and the Chicago Sun-Times.

Chicago Police told Paste BN that the man was found on Sunday night in a basement bedroom of a home in the Norwood Park neighborhood in northwest Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office identified the man to Paste BN as George Levin and said an autopsy showed he died of multiple injuries suffered during an assault.

Levin's sister made the gruesome discovery, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, reporting that the woman told police that she had heard a loud noise coming from his apartment. When she went to check on him, she saw the back door open and a stranger, whom she asked if her brother was OK.

"Yes, I am with your brother. I will have him call you," the man told her, the newspaper reported, citing a police report.

Later she found Levin bound and beaten, and a sock stuffed into his mouth, the Sun-Times reported. She told police that several items were missing, including his cellphone, wallet and car keys.

According to CBS News Chicago, police said that two people of interest in the killing are currently being questioned.

Neighbors say crime in the area is rare

Levin’s neighbors told local news outlets that crime in the area is rare and that it is a tight-knit neighborhood.

"It was very upsetting to hear," David Kane told CBS News Chicago. "Definitely disturbing to hear something like this."

A resident of the neighborhood for more than two decades, Kane told the station that he knew most people in the area.

"I'd like to know the details of what happened. What's behind this?" he said. "You know, something happening basically right around the corner from me, you know, what happened here?"
