Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams discussed a possible Republican primary run, the New York Times reported late on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The newspaper said he discussed the options as recently as Monday. When asked for a comment by the Times, he said he was running as a Republican.

A criminal case had cast a shadow over Adams' administration and his reputation was damaged after he was charged with corruption. On Monday, the Justice Department directed federal prosecutors in New York to drop their five-count indictment against him.

If Adams wants to switch parties ahead of the June 24 primary election, the deadline to file with the Board of Elections is this Friday, Feb. 14.

Official NYC mayoral candidates as of Feb. 12, according to PIX 11.

Democrats:

  • Eric Adams – Incumbent NYC mayor
  • Michael Blake – NY Assemblymember from the 79th District
  • Brad Lander – NYC Comptroller
  • Zohran Mamdani – NY Assemblymember from the 36th District
  • Zellnor Myrie – NY State Senator from the 20th District
  • Jessica Ramos – NY State Senator from the 13th District
  • Scott Stringer – Former NYC Comptroller
  • Whitney Tilson – Hedge fund manager

Independent:

  • Jim Walden - Attorney and former prosecutor

New York City has "closed primaries," which means only members of the candidate's political party can vote on which candidate should become the nominee for the general election on Nov. 4.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
