At least three people are dead, two others are injured and one is missing after a boat overturned off the coast of Staten Island in New York, officials confirmed.

Emergency responders received a call Sunday afternoon about a boat with six people on board overturning in the Ambrose Channel near Staten Island, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) told Paste BN. Several agencies – including FDNY, city police, New Jersey State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard – responded to the incident.

The overturning was reported shortly after 12 p.m. when crews received an alert about a "vessel taking on water" near Breezy Point, a neighborhood located on the western tip of Queens’ Rockaway peninsula, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The agency deployed three rescue boats as well as an MH-65 helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, according to the statement.

Of the five people rescued from the sinking boat, the Coast Guard said four were unresponsive. Crews administered CPR to some of the unresponsive victims.

Two of the victims were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital. Three were taken to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, where emergency medical crews were waiting, the Coast Guard said.

The New York City Police Department told Paste BN three victims were later pronounced deceased. As of Sunday night, police said one person remained in critical condition while another is in stable condition.

The Coast Guard said Sunday night it is still searching for one person missing in the water about five miles southeast of Breezy Point.

The Ambrose Channel is the main shipping channel in and out of the Port of New York and New Jersey, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is part of the Lower New York Bay, which is located off the coasts of Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and Breezy Point, Queens, New York.
