American teen taken into custody after her newborn baby thrown from hotel window

An American teenager was taken into custody by Paris police after her newborn baby was thrown from the window of a hotel on the outskirts of Paris, according to multiple reports.
The baby is believed to have been thrown from the second floor of the Ibis Styles hotel in eastern Paris, French prosecutors told CNN. They said the baby was rushed to the nearby Robert Debré hospital where it died from severe injuries.
Paris prosecutors are investigating the crime as a homicide of a minor under the age of 15.
The mother of the child has not been named. She was taken to a hospital for medical care after she gave birth. Prosecutors said she was in Paris with a group of other young people traveling throughout Europe. AFP and a local French outlet Le Parisien reported she is 18 years old.
The U.S. Department of State told Paste BN it is aware of the situation and monitoring the case.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent tragedy involving the loss of a young life,” it said in an emailed statement. “Due to privacy and other considerations, we have no further comment at this time
