Two people were injured in a shooting that took place in a parking lot on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia Wednesday night, according to local and university police.
The Norfolk Police Department said on social media Wednesday it is investigating the shooting, which took place on the 1400 block of W. 49th Street. Police said the call came in around 9:40 p.m.
ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton said in a statement Wednesday night the two individuals injured were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Shelton said the individuals "are not students and are not affiliated" with the university.
Shelter-in-place lifted
"An emergency alert was sent by email, phone and text at 10:01 p.m. advising members of the campus community to remain indoors," Shelton said in the statement. "At 11:43 p.m., ODU sent an emergency alert lifting the shelter-in-place. There is no ongoing threat to the ODU community," the statement said.
Norfolk police said the investigation is ongoing and additional updates are to follow as they become available.
Shelton said walk-in counseling services will be available Thursday for ODU students. The Office of Counseling can be reached at 757-683-4401 and appointments can also be made online.
