1 dead, 3 missing after boat capsizes in Florida


Officials are searching on Saturday for three missing people after a boat capsized in Jacksonville, Florida, leaving one person dead.

The 18-foot vessel overturned Friday evening on the St. Johns River. The U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies said they were searching for for an adult and two children on Saturday.

At around 7 p.m. Friday, the Coast Guard received a radio report of the overturned boat, located near Goat Island. Four people were trapped underneath and four people were on top of it, according to the report.

No one on board wore life jackets, according to a Coast Guard news release. The cause of the boat capsizing is still under investigation.

Officials from Jacksonville Sheriff’s marine unit rescued the four people on top of the vessel. One adult was pulled unresponsive from the water and pronounced dead, said Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Ryan Dickinson. No additional details were available about the person.

A Coast Guard rescue surface swimmer tried to make contact with people suspected of being underneath the boat but didn’t receive a response. Then, sheriff’s divers searched underneath the boat but didn’t locate anyone.

Search-and-rescue efforts by multiple agencies continued overnight and into Saturday afternoon.
