A 7-year-old girl died after being struck by a falling boulder at a ski resort in Nevada over the weekend.

The incident occurred at Diamond Ski Resort in Incline Village, northeast of the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe and just by the California border. In a statement on Monday, the resort said medical services were alerted of a non-skiing accident involving a child around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday.

"The Diamond Peak Ski Patrol responded immediately and provided first aid while emergency services were en route," the statement said. "Despite the emergency medical team’s best efforts, the child succumbed to their injuries."

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the death, described the incident as "a tragic accident" in a statement.

"There was no foul play involved, and the Sheriff’s Office extends our deepest condolences to all involved," the statement said.

Diamond Peak Ski Resort said its staff was "deeply affected" by the tragedy and extended its "heartfelt condolences" to the girl's family and "all of whom have been profoundly saddened by the accident."

Death ruled an accident

The child was later identified as Adelyn Grimes, of Reno, Nevada, and her manner of death was ruled an accident by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, KCRA and KTVN reported.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, meanwhile, did not immediately respond when contacted by Paste BN on Tuesday. However, the medical examiner's office said the girl died from blunt force injuries on her neck and chest, Our Town Reno, a local collective reporting project, reported.
