Boat that capsized off Florida coast leaves 1 dead, 4 rescued; 5 still missing

The U.S. Coast Guard is looking for five people who went missing after a vessel capsized near Florida last week.

The incident happened on April 11, 29 miles off St. Lucie Inlet. Two days later, crews from the Seventh Coast Guard District rescued four people, according to the TC Palm, part of the Paste BN Network.

The agency reported the rescue and the missing people in a post on the X social media platform. The post included a photo of the boat, which Coast Guard officials said was about 25 feet in length.

An agency spokesman said the vessel departed from the Bahamas, and a good Samaritan reported the boat capsizing.

Additionally, one of the rescued people said the boat capsized and that five other people were aboard.

The Martin County Fire Rescue reported on April 13 that at least one person died.

Search ongoing for 5 still missing

The agency said the search for the five missing people was ongoing Sunday.

"The length of Coast Guard search efforts are always a case by case basis considering a variety of factors including drift patterns, water temperature, and time since notification," Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Strasburg told TCPalm in an email Sunday.

Strasburg said further developments about the search would be posted on X. Paste BN reached out to the Coast Guard on Monday for an update.

The agency received four people via helicopter, three with non-life-threatening injuries. One of them suffered from serious injuries, and all were transported to a hospital.
