One person is dead and 11 others were wounded in a mass shooting at a North Carolina home, according to investigators.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report after midnight Sunday, June 1, of multiple people shot at a residence near Hickory. One of the 11 wounded was in critical condition, according to a statement.

Sheriff's deputies and local police and state special agents were working to establish a motive, the statement said.

Investigators told ABC-affiliate WSOC-TV there was a party at one of the homes with more than 100 people when one or more people began discharging firearms.

Rep. Pat Harrigan, R-North Carolina, said he was in touch with the sheriff and is "fully engaged and ready to support our law enforcement personnel and any families impacted by this tragic event."

Catawba County is located in the western part of the state, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, about an hour north of Charlotte.

The shooting occurred along a stretch of Walnut Acres Drive lined with two-story homes with broad lawns.

No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon.
