Police officer 'ambushed' during shooting at Santa Monica mall, authorities say
LOS ANGELES – A police officer was "ambushed" on June 25 after attempting to detain a man suspected in a separate shooting in Santa Monica, California, authorities said.
The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. PT when an officer approached a man believed to be the suspect in a June 22 shooting involving a Waymo vehicle, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. That shooting – at 2nd Street and Broadway – left two teenagers injured, the Santa Monica Daily Press and ABC News reported.
"As the officer attempted to detain him, the suspect fled on foot," police said in a news release. "During the brief pursuit, the suspect ambushed the officer and fired multiple rounds, striking him before fleeing the area."
The unnamed officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition, according to police. The shooting took place near 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue near Santa Monica Place, the capstone mall of the Third Street Promenade shopping district, Public Information Officer Lt. Lewis Gilmour said in an email to Paste BN.
Police said that the suspect was arrested at Palisades Park, just north of where the shooting took place, at around 4:20 p.m. PT, crediting a "timely tip from a resident."
In a later post on X, police confirmed the suspect was the person wanted for the Waymo shooting.
