Obama to discuss Islamic State threat on 'Meet the Press'

The Sunday talk shows will once again be dominated by discussion of the threat posed by Islamic State extremists in the Middle East and the continuing crisis in Ukraine.

President Obama will weigh in, making a rare appearance on NBC's Meet the Press.

Islamic State militants killed a second American journalist this week, putting pressure on Obama to expand airstrikes against the radical group into Syria. So far, the administration has limited the airstrikes to Iraq.

Meanwhile, the fighting in Ukraine's east between the Ukrainian government and Russian-backed separatists came to a halt on Friday as the two sides signed a cease-fire agreement. Obama expressed skepticism that the truce would hold and promised a new round of sanctions against Russia to pressure the nation to respect its neighbors' borders.

During a two-day NATO summit this week in Wales, the alliance announced the creation of a new rapid-response force to defend NATO members in Eastern Europe from the threat posed by Russia.

Here's the Sunday lineup:

• NBC's Meet the Press: The show's new moderator, Chuck Todd, will interview Obama about the Islamic State threat, the U.S. relationship with Russia and Ukraine, the Ebola virus outbreak in Africa, the November congressional elections and the president's decision to delay action on changing the immigration system.
