When questioned Wednesday about allegations that President Trump attempted to shut down the Russia investigation, Ryan told reporters it's clear there are people who wish to harm the president. He continued, “We have an obligation to carry out our oversight, regardless of which party is in the White House. That means before rushing to judgment we get all the pertinent information.”

Hours later, the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the agency's Russia investigation. Trump sent out a statement accepting the appointment, but later tweeted calling the investigation the biggest "witch hunt" in political history.
