Rep. Steve Scalise back in intensive care unit, listed in serious condition

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was shot during a Republican baseball team's practice last month, has been readmitted to the intensive care unit in serious condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the hospital announced Wednesday.

“Congressman Steve Scalise has been readmitted to the Intensive Care Unit due to new concerns for infection,” Medstar said in a statement. “His condition is listed as serious. We will provide another update tomorrow, July 6."

Scalise,  R-La., and four other people were injured when a gunman opened fire on a Republican baseball practice in nearby Alexandria, Va. U.S. Capitol Police and other officers returned fire and killed the gunman, later identified as James Hodgkinson.

Earlier this week, Rep. Phil Roe, R-Tenn., told WJHL that Scalise's condition was improving and invited the injured lawmaker to the University of Tennessee-Louisiana State University football game later this year.

"He’s had a very, very serious injury," Roe said, according to WJHL. "He’s) just out of bed. He’s not able to eat yet, but he is getting better.”

Scalise was transferred out of the ICU on June 22 after his condition improved to fair, according to a hospital statement on June 23. 

A bullet fractured his bones and injured internal organs, requiring Scalise to undergo multiple surgeries, according to hospital officials.
