OnPolitics: What does Donald Trump's indictment mean for American politics?
Hi there, OnPolitics readers.
Donald Trump became a historic first as the only former president to face criminal charges following his indictment by a Manhattan grand jury.
His arraignment and plea of not guilty to 34 felony charges of falsifying business records in connection to hush money payments yesterday further contributed to this unprecedented moment.
But now what?
As Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page reports: For all the uncertainties, a new chapter has opened in American politics and law.
What this means for 2024: Trump’s indictment boosted him in national polls among Republican voters and prompted most of his potential rivals to rally behind him, outraged at the charges against Trump.
The possibility of more indictments: The New York grand jury’s indictment is not the only charges Trump faces. Two investigations seem to be reaching their conclusion: His alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
What’s next?: Trump’s arraignment kicked off a legal process that could eventually result in a trial, but because of the unprecedented nature of this case there’s no certainty. Legal experts say Trump’s legal team is likely to file several pre-trial motions in attempts to delay the case or dismiss it outright.
