Dianne Feinstein to lie in San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday ahead of funeral service
WASHINGTON − Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the trailblazing lawmaker who died last week at age 90, will lie in California’s San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday, her press office said.
The public is invited to pay their respects and sign a condolence book. A funeral service for Feinstein will be held Thursday at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center in the Herbst Theatre.
The service itself will not be open to the public, but city residents can attend the simulcast at City Hall. After the service, the senator will be buried at a “private, family-only ceremony," according to the office.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., boarded a plane from the president's military fleet on Saturday as it carried Feinstein's casket to San Francisco, according to CNN.
“She was my neighbor, my friend. My family loved her personally, politically, in every way," Pelosi said on CNN’s “State of the Union."
Feinstein had suffered various health problems, including encephalitis and Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a shingles-related condition that can affect facial nerves. She was also hospitalized in March for shingles − which required her to step away from Congress for nearly three months − and in August after a minor fall in her home.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Sunday that he would appoint Laphonza Butler to fill Feinstein's seat. Butler is the first Black woman and mother to lead Emily’s List, an organization that helps Democratic women win elections, and she was an adviser for Vice President Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns.
