Do I need to register to vote?

If you’re not already registered, you’ll need to in order to vote in South Dakota. 

How do I do that?

You can print and fill out this paper form then return it by mail or hand deliver it to your county auditor. You cannot return the form by fax or email. 

What's the deadline?

The deadline to submit your registration form to vote in the 2024 general elections is Oct. 21.

Can I vote by mail?

If you’re unable to vote in person on Election Day, you may be eligible to apply for an absentee ballot. You can print and fill out this paper form and then mail or hand deliver it to your county election official. Only overseas and uniformed services voters can send their application forms by fax or email. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on Nov. 4, the day before Election Day. 

What's the latest date I can turn in my ballot?

According to the South Dakota Secretary of State’s website, "Your voted ballot MUST be received by your County Election Official on Election Day in enough time to deliver your ballot to your voting precinct before the polls close." 

Is there a way I can track my ballot?

What if I need help getting to the polling site?

If you have an illness or disability that will make it hard for you to make it to your polling location, you may be eligible to request an absentee ballot.
