During his inaugural address, President Donald Trump vowed to change the name of Denali in Alaska back to Mount McKinley.

"A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America," Trump said, "and we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs."

The mountain range unofficially was named after McKinley in 1896, and officially by the federal government in 1917.

It was named after President William McKinley, the Ohio-born 25th president of the United States. He served from 1897 until he was assassinated in 1901.

In his speech, Trump said McKinley "made our country very rich through tariffs and our talents."

In the following years, controversy arose regarding changing the mountain's name to Denali, which aligned with Alaskan culture. The name was officially changed during President Barack Obama's term to Denali in 2015.

The name change was one of several pledges Trump made on Monday when he declared, "A golden age of America begins right now."
