WASHINGTON − Campaign season is never really over.

President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance won the 2024 race for the White House just three months ago and actually took office two weeks ago. Yet the Republican No. 2 is already being asked about his plans for 2028.

And he is, at the moment, declining to answer.

"I'd say that we've not thought a lot about politics in the last six months," Vance told Fox News' Maria Bartiromo Sunday, after she inquired about his upcoming intentions.

"We'll see what happens come 2028," Vance continued. "But the way that I think about this is, the best thing for my future is actually the best thing for the American people, which is that we do a really good job over the next three and a half years."

It's a natural assumption that Vance would throw his hat in the ring − and likely hold an edge over other GOP candidates − given that over half of all vice presidents throughout American history have launched a subsequent presidential bid.

Fifteen VPs have gone on to become commander-in-chief, but eight of those did so following the death of a president.

Most recently, former Vice President Kamala Harris attempted to succeed her boss, former President Joe Biden. Harris competed with Biden in 2020 for the Democratic presidential nomination, and many assumed she would run again in 2028 − before Biden dropped his reelection bid over the summer and passed the 2024 torch to Harris.

Now, Democrats have no clear top prospect for the next presidential race, though many of the governors, senators and others Harris considered for her ticket's VP slot could launch their own campaigns.

Over on the Republican side, Vance, a 40-year-old former Ohio senator, is the presumptive next-in-line. He is expected to have support from much of MAGA-world, though other conservative candidates would presumably launch campaigns too.

"We'll cross that political bridge," Vance told Fox, "when we come to it."
