Majority approve of how President Donald Trump is handling job, CBS News poll finds

It has been less than a month since President Donald Trump was inaugurated, but he has a positive approval rating among adults in the U.S., according to a new poll.

When asked if they approve or disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job, 53% of the people polled said they approve and 47% said they disapprove, according to the CBS News/YouGov poll published Sunday.

According to the poll, 31% strongly approve; 22% somewhat approve; 9% somewhat disapprove; and 38% strongly disapprove.

The survey asked 2,175 U.S. adults multiple questions about the start of Trump's second presidency from Feb. 5 to Feb. 7 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 points.

Here are some of the other results that stood out from the poll:

How much attention are Americans paying to political news?

Those polled were asked how much attention they've paid to political news since the 2024 election ended.

Here's the result:

  • 45% said they are paying a lot of attention.
  • 35% said they are paying "some" attention.
  • 15% said they are paying "not much" attention.
  • 5% said they are paying "none at all."

Trump is doing more than expected

Of those polled, 49% said Trump is doing more during his first weeks in office than expected, and 9% said he's doing less. Around 41% of people said he's doing the exact amount they expected him to do.

A majority, 61%, of those who said Trump is doing more than expected said he is doing things they "mostly like" versus the 39% who said they "mostly don't like" the things he's doing.

How would poll answers describe Trump?

People were asked which words do and don't describe Trump.

They were more likely to describe the president as "tough" and less likely to say he is "compassionate."

Majority believe he's doing what he promised during his 2024 campaign

Most people polled said that Trump is doing what he promised he would during his 2024 campaign.

In total, 70% said he was doing exactly what he promised, while 30% said he was doing something different.

Is Trump 'too focused' on certain items?

People polled were also asked if Trump is focusing "too much," the "right amount" or "not enough" on each of the following:

  • Deporting immigrants who are in the country illegally.
  • Lowering prices on goods and services.
  • Helping states impacted by natural disasters.
  • Cutting taxes.
  • Cutting government spending
  • Putting tariffs on goods from other countries.
  • Ending diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
  • Cutting U.S. foreign aid programs.

According to the poll, 49% were more likely to say Trump is focusing the right amount on helping states affected by natural disasters. Of the respondents, 49% said he is focusing too much on putting tariffs on goods, and 66% said he is focusing too little on lowering the prices of goods and services.

When asked if he is focusing too much on deporting immigrants in the country illegally, 44% said he's focused the right amount, 43% said he is focusing too much, and 13% said his focus is not enough.
