When Republican JD Vance and Democrat Tim Walz collide in their first — and likely only — debate hosted by CBS News on Tuesday, both will try to boost their visibility with the American public while making the case for their respective presidential nominees, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

Potential voters usually overlook a vice presidential debate, but Walz and Vance's escalating battle of words has attracted a lot of attention, and voters are expected to watch them go head-to-head before the Nov. 5 election.

Vance and Walz, both from the Midwest, will draw on their roots to prepare for the debate. The two men will try to convince voters that they understand the desires of Americans in the heartland, but are sharply divided on policy and social issues.

Here's what to know about the official face-off between the vice presidential candidates.
