Is Election Day a federal holiday? What to know before decision day 2024.
Every four years, Americans head to the polls to vote in the presidential election.
This year, America could vote for a Kamala Harris-Tim Walz or Donald Trump-JD Vance administration, among other candidates. Besides picking the commander-in-chief, millions will also cast ballots for U.S. representatives and senators. All 435 House seats are up for election as well as 34 Senate seats.

When is Election Day 2024?
The 2024 election will be held on Nov. 5, 2024. Election Day is held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, according to the Department of Justice.
Is Election Day a federal holiday?
Election Day is not a federal holiday.
Some states do, however, observe Election Day as a holiday. Most state offices will be closed on the date, including:
- Delaware
- Hawaii
- Illinois
- Indiana
- Louisiana
- Maryland
- Michigan
- Montana
- New Jersey
- New York
- Rhode Island
- Virginia
- West Virginia
Twenty-four states, plus the District of Columbia, offer paid time off to vote.
Some states offer time off for voting but with no pay, including Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.
