WASHINGTON - President-elect Donald Trump told reporters on Monday that he doesn’t know if Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will choose his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to fill Sen. Marco Rubio’s seat after Rubio was tapped to serve as secretary of state.

“I don't know. Ron's doing a good job, and it's his choice. Nothing to do with me,” Donald Trump said during a press conference at Mar-a-Lago when asked about the open Senate seat.

Trump's remarks come as Lara Trump announced earlier this month on X, formerly Twitter, that she was stepping down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee, a position she’s held since March. She touted her work on election integrity, fundraising and voter turnout, saying the job she came to do was “now complete.”

Lara Trump also told the Associated Press that filling Rubio’s seat is something she would “seriously consider.”

“If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like,” Lara Trump told the wire service. “And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”

Rubio, a three-term senator, appears to be on track for his colleagues to confirm his appointment to be the nation's top diplomat running the State Department. DeSantis posted last month on X that he'd be conducting "extensive vetting and candidate interviews" on Rubio's replacement and "likely" would make his selection by the beginning of January.

"Florida deserves a Senator who will help President Trump deliver on his election mandate, be strong on immigration and border security, take on the entrenched bureaucracy and administrative state, reverse the nation’s fiscal decline, be animated by conservative principles, and has a proven record of results," DeSantis said.

Donald Trump said at Monday's press conference that Lara Trump is “unbelievable” and praised her work at the Republican National Committee.

“Ron's gonna have to make that decision, and he'll make that decision. I also know that Laura's got so many other things...People want her to be on television. They want to give her a contract. You know her predominant thought is our country and her family,” he said.
