ICYMI: Sen. Landrieu helps out with keg stand before LSU game

This post has been updated:

Mix a U.S. senator, a keg stand at a raucous college football game tailgating party, and a tough re-election campaign ... and you get a much-talked-about photo in the Twitter age.

Sen. Mary Landrieu, a vulnerable Democrat seeking a fourth term in Louisiana, helped a man clad in Louisiana State University's purple do a keg stand on Saturday. Tim Murphy, a reporter for Mother Jones, and Kyle Trygstad, a Roll Call reporter, witnessed the event and wrote about it

Here's the photo snapped and tweeted by Bill Clark, a CQ Roll Call photographer:

For those people whose college days are in the rear-view mirror, a keg stand goes like this:  Two people hold someone upside down, while another person holds the tap into the mouth of the person who is drinking while his or her feet are in the air.  "The object of this activity is to chug beer from the keg upside down for as long as possible," the Urban Dictionary says.

Some in the zealous pro-LSU crowd wanted Landrieu to do a keg stand herself, but she declined. From the Mother Jones story:

"My first keg stand," Landrieu says, as we walk away. "He wanted me to do it, but I said absolutely not—at least not in front of the national press." What if it would've won her some votes? "That's alright—I'm not that desperate."

Landrieu told Roll Callthat she saw the unidentified beer drinker's father in the crowd. "His father was there, so I felt OK about it," the senator said.

Here's another view snapped and tweeted by Ellen Carmichael, a former spokeswoman for Herman Cain's presidential campaign:

Landrieu's leading Republican challenger is Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La. No word yet on whether these images will show up in a campaign ad.

As for Republican critics of the senator's assist, Landrieu brushed them off Monday. "They need to get a sense of humor and they need to get a life -- it's just the way we roll," Landrieu is quoted as saying by Roll Call.
