How Sullivan County became flash point in N.H. Senate race
Where in New Hampshire is Sullivan County? The location became a flash point in the final debate between Scott Brown and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen — until a reporter apologized hours later on TV and Twitter.
Brown, a Republican who has fought charges of being a carpetbagger from Massachusetts, was asked a question Thursday night by James Pindell of WMUR about the economy in Sullivan County.
The former senator spoke of opportunities "up north" in New Hampshire, when Pindell interrupted: "We're talking about Sullivan County, and I think you were talking about the North Country?" What ensued was a tussle over geography, with Brown talking about "any place past Concord" and Pindell saying Sullivan County is "west of Concord, it's not north of Concord."
Democrats jumped and circulated video of the exchange, posted above. The Twitterverse exploded with maps and jokes. But it turns out, Sullivan County is both west AND north of Concord.
"On this point, Scott Brown was right," Pindell said on WMUR. "I was wrong and I apologize to both campaigns."
Shaheen will take her get-out-the-vote efforts to three New Hampshire cities today including Clermont — located in Sullivan County.
Pindell sent out a couple of tweets regarding his error and his apology clip was posted on YouTube.
