Hawaii congresswoman activated by National Guard
Duty calls for Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii.
The congresswoman has been activated by the National Guard to help with emergency response as lava flows from the active Kilauea volcano and threatens a rural town in Hawaii.
Gabbard, who is favored to win a second term on Election Day, will join about 80 members of her Army National Guard unit. She joined the Guard in 2003 and is an Iraq War veteran. It is not known how long Gabbard, a military police captain, will be activated.
Lt. Col Chuck Anthony, a Guard spokesman, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that unarmed soldiers and airmen will be "used as additional eyes and ears for the police."
