Watch: Boehner preps brine for Thanksgiving turkey
Move over, Mario Batali and all you Iron Chefs, and make way for John Boehner.
Like many Americans, the House speaker is in charge of cooking the turkey for his family's Thanksgiving meal. And Boehner is a staunch advocate of brining the bird — just like Batali, Martha Stewart and other culinary celebrities — to ensure maximum moistness.
The secret to Boehner's brine recipe is maple syrup, and he explains how to make it along with his techniques for cooking the bird in a new video. We are also proponents of roasting the turkey breast side down for half the cooking time and then flipping it until it's done. Boehner's expert tip? Bringing the bird to an internal temperature of 160 degrees and letting it rest for up to an hour before carving.
The speaker also has side dishes covered with his grandmother's creamed spinach recipe (with bacon) and a basic stuffing recipe.
