Hillary Clinton's tweets provide clues to her policy views

Hillary Clinton wants to make college more affordable, opposes repeal of the Affordable Care Act and supports extension of the children's health insurance program.

Missed her comments on those issues? She shared them all via Twitter.

Since the beginning of the year, Clinton has selectively weighed in on political debates in 140 characters or less and sometimes to great effect. Her first comment about the controversy over her use of a private email account while secretary of State came via Twitter, and she generated news with tweets about vaccines.

But when Clinton formally jumps into the presidential race Sunday, the public will want to hear from her directly on where she stands on issues. After an expected announcement via social media, Clinton is likely to head to Iowa, where she'll share the rationale for her campaign and open herself up to questions from the reporters who trail her.

"Secretary Clinton has to focus on the things she can control," said Nathan Gonzales, editor of the non-partisan Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report. "She can control her own message. What vision is she providing for the country?"

Republicans are waiting.

"They're playing it safe because they want a coronation, not a competition," said Allison Moore, a spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee. "If Hillary Clinton’s team were confident in her candidacy, then they would not want to limit public and media access to her."
